I was really taken when I saw this piece because all these seemingly complex effects were made by one person and a big 12-foot re-purposed army computer in 1961 long before modern programs. The colors and patterns were captivating and reminiscent of hallucination scenes in movies.

Whitney's work is fascinating because this kind of work seems so incredibly innovative for his time. I'd like to know if he was the first to apply kaleidoscopic effects into digital art because this kind of motion imagery permeates much of our contemporary culture: hallucination movie scenes, the screen effects on music programs, screen savers, etc. In comparing his work to this clip (http://www.labnol.org/software/turn-images-into-pixel-art/12978/ ) it would be interesting to see how his methods of creating this art compare.
